Divyaswathi Citla Sridhar: Addressing the Gaps in Inherited Platelet Function Disorders
Divyaswathi Citla Sridhar, Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, adding:
“Excited to share our publication: ‘Bleeding Phenotypes in Inherited Platelet Function Disorders: Insights From the ATHNdataset’ in the Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
Using one of the largest cohorts of patients with inherited platelet function disorders (IPFDs) in the United States from the ATHNdataset, we examined bleeding patterns, treatment utilization, and diagnostic distribution across more than 2,300 individuals.
Our findings highlight several important gaps:
- Significant bleeding morbidity persists across all IPFD subtypes, including serious events such as intracranial hemorrhage and joint bleeding.
- The majority of patients remain classified under broad ‘unclassified’ categories, underscoring need for better diagnostic work up and specificity.
- There is a critical need for more robust, prospective data collection to better define bleeding phenotypes, improve diagnostic precision, and guide evidence-based management.
Funding from the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network (ATHN) HTRS DREAM Award made this study possible!
Very thankful to my fantastic mentors – Sanjay Ahuja and Robert Sidonio.
The American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network (ATHN) Transcends Glanzmann Thrombasthenia module is an important step forward in collecting prospective data for patients with Glanzmann thrombasthenia.
But we need similar efforts and sustained funding across the full spectrum of inherited platelet function disorders to better serve these patients.
IPFDs deserve far more attention—in research, clinical care, and registry development.”
