Fawaz AlOtaibi: Can AI Replace Contrast CTA for Vascular Screening?

Fawaz AlOtaibi, Neurocardiology and Cerebrovascular Fellow at Western University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Jiahao Liao et al., published in International Journal of Stroke, adding:

”No dye, no second scan, just AI reading your vessels.

A new multicenter study (Int J Stroke) trained a deep learning model on approximately 3,700 patients to generate synthetic CTA images directly from plain non-contrast CT. No contrast dye, no additional scan, and no contrast-related risk.

The results: clinicians rated image quality 4.45 out of 5, with consistent performance across four external hospitals. When reading the AI-generated images blindly, they achieved 92.7 percent accuracy in distinguishing diseased from normal arteries, and around 91 percent accuracy in differentiating aneurysms from stenosis.

Not a replacement for real CTA, small vessels and hemorrhage-obscured aneurysms are still weak spots. But as a low-cost pre-screening/triage tool to flag who actually needs a contrast study, this is a compelling proof of concept.”
