Haroun Gajraj: UGFS as a Minimally Invasive and Safe Option for Superficial Venous Thrombosis

Haroun Gajraj, Phlebologist and Board Member of the British Association of Sclerotherapists, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Thank you Alessandro Frullini for this wonderful publication and thank you The British Association of Sclerotherapists for hosting the journal on the BAS website.

I am still reading…

One paper immediately reminded me of Christopher Pittman presentation at BAS25.

The paper is:

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy with polidocanol: a novel strategy to stabilize and definitively resolve superficial venous thrombosis‘ and it evaluates the safety and long-term effectiveness of ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) for treating post-thrombotic superficial venous thrombosis (SVT).

Conclusions: UGFS is a safe, effective, and durable minimally invasive option for preventing SVT recurrence in selected patients.

By inducing stable fibrosis, this approach eliminates the anatomical substrate for local recurrence and may reduce the need for prolonged anticoagulant therapy and its associated hemorrhagic risks.

Chris went further – he proposed UGFS as an early therapeutic intervention to halt the inflammatory process.

The JOS and Dr Pittman’s presentation are available on the BAS website.”

The British Association of Sclerotherapists shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Exciting news in phlebology…

The April 2026 Issue of the Journal of Sclerotherapy is out!

We are thrilled to share the latest release from Edizioni Minerva Medica. Volume 2, No. 1 of the Journal of Sclerotherapy (JOS) is now available, featuring groundbreaking research and expert commentary on the evolving landscape of chronic venous disease treatment.

This issue, led by Chief Editor Alessandro Frullini, challenges traditional treatment paradigms and advocates for more nuanced, patient-centered care

What’s Inside This Issue?

Editorial: ‘Vein Insufficiency: Guidelines or Lobbylines?

Dr. Frullini questions the current ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach that often defaults to thermal ablation. He argues for a shift toward quality of life and more pragmatic, less invasive options like modern sclerotherapy.

A New Standard in Classification: A multi-center study introduces the diaF/VD(L) system, a fast and standardized way to classify the degree of pathological involvement in the great saphenous vein.

This study reveals significant anatomical differences between the right and left legs that could impact how we plan treatments.

Treating Recurrence (REVAT): Research from Nicola Kriechenbauer and Karsten Hatmann demonstrates that ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) is a highly effective and safe method for treating recurrent varicose veins at the sapheno-femoral junction, particularly for veins with smaller diameters.

Managing Superficial Venous Thrombosis (SVT):
Gianluigi Rosi and colleagues present a novel strategy using UGFS to stabilize and definitively resolve post-thrombotic SVT, potentially reducing the need for prolonged anticoagulation.

Letters to the Editor:
Christopher Pittman, discusses why ‘Foam is not inferior,’ emphasizing its scalability and effectiveness in real-world practice, especially in underserved regions.

Why This Matters

As phlebology moves toward increasingly technological solutions, this issue reminds us to keep the individual patient’s anatomy and comfort at the center of our decision-making.

The Journal of Sclerotherapy continues to provide high-quality, peer-reviewed evidence to support these critical clinical shifts.

The Journal of Sclerotherapy is a fully open-access journal. You can read, download, and share these articles to stay at the forefront of venous care.”
