Jean Nakhle: Uncovering How Excess Cysteine Drives Cell Death
Jean Nakhle, Senior Editor at Nature Metabolism, shared a post on LinkedIn about recent articles, published in Nature Metabolism, adding:
“Out now in Nature Metabolism:
Why is excess cysteine toxic?
Kivanç Birsoy and colleagues show that cysteine overload triggers a mitochondrial iron-dependent cell death that is mechanistically distinct from ferroptosis and disulfidptosis.
The accompanying News and Views led by Jessalyn Ubellacker.
These findings nicely complement the study by Lucas Sullivan, showing that excess cysteine forms toxic conjugates that impair proliferation.”
