Rana Al-Hrout: Exploring Approach to Macrocytic Anemia
Rana Al-Hrout, Clinical Pathology-Hematology Specialist at Ministry of Health – Jordan, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Approach to Macrocytic Anemia
Macrocytic anemia is not a diagnosis by itself – it is a finding that requires a systematic diagnostic approach.
Key steps in the evaluation:
- Confirm macrocytosis (MCV more than 100 fL).
- Review the peripheral blood film and reticulocyte count.
- Distinguish between megaloblastic and non-megaloblastic causes.
- Assess vitamin B12 and folate levels when indicated.
- Consider liver disease, hypothyroidism, medications, hemolysis, and bone marrow disorders.”
