Jochebed Adwoa Sutherland: First Reported Case of Breast Mondor’s Disease in a Patient Living with Sickle Cell

“Storytime!

As a medical student in Ghana, particularly during our clinical years and surgery rotations, there were a few things you simply had to know.

One of them was the chapter on the breast and its diseases in BAJA (the medical student’s bible for surgery in Africa)

When presented with common breast complaints such as pain or a breast lump during rounds, clinic days or OSCEs; we were expected to rapidly work through the differentials, always guided by a familiar clinical adage : ‘common things are common.’

The lesson behind it was simple. Start with the common causes so you don’t overlook the obvious while searching for something rare.

I never imagined that, a few years later, I would encounter an uncommon diagnosis for a common complaint!

Our recently published case report describes Mondor’s disease of the breast in a Ghanaian woman living with sickle cell disease (HbSS).

Mondor’s disease of the breast is a rare, benign cause of breast pain, characterised by thrombophlebitis of the superficial veins of the breast and anteriolateral chest wall.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of Mondor’s disease of the breast in a person living with sickle cell disease.

I am incredibly grateful to my co-authors and mentors for their guidance throughout this work, and, most importantly, to our patient for allowing us to document and share her clinical experience.

This case was a reminder of something I first learned as a medical student: common things are common; but sometimes, the rare things really do walk into your clinic.”
