Joyisa Deb: Does Parenteral Iron Increase Infection Risk?
Joyisa Deb, Head Apollo Excelcare Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about the recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:
“Happy to share that our review ‘Parenteral iron – Does it increase infection risk?’ is now published in Vox Sanguinis!
As intravenous (IV) iron becomes central to patient blood management (PBM), one question continues to generate debate:
Does parenteral iron increase infection risk?
My Key takeaway points are:
- Current evidence does not clearly show increased infection risk with IV iron, especially with newer formulations
- Clinical context influences infection risk (age, CKD/dialysis, iron load, ferritin, active infection)
- Careful, patient-specific individualised therapy remains essential
- How infection is defined in studies plays a crucial role in interpreting results
- The future lies in conducting robust RCTs with standardized infection outcomes and biomarker-guided, safer dosing strategies.
Grateful to all co – authors and collaborators!”
