Cancer, Catheters and Outcomes in Upper Extremity DVT – JTH

Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Philippe Debourdeau et al, adding:

“Clinical Outcomes of Upper Extremity Deep Vein Thrombosis According to Cancer Status and Catheter Association: A RIETE (Registro Informatizado de la Enfermedad TromboEmbólica) Registry Analysis

A RIETE registry analysis of 4,979 patients with symptomatic isolated upper extremity DVT examined outcomes by cancer status and catheter association.

Among patients with cancer, catheter associated events were accompanied by lower mortality and recurrent VTE rates than noncatheter associated events.

Among those without cancer, catheter associated events were accompanied by higher mortality and major bleeding rates.

Recurrence after anticoagulation discontinuation was infrequent across groups.

These observational findings highlight clinical heterogeneity and inform individualized assessment without defining a universal treatment duration.”
