Jukka Partanen: How HLA Heterodimers Refine Genetic Risk in Lichen Planus
Jukka Partanen, Research Professor At Finnish Red Cross Blood Service, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in HLA, adding:
“HLA alleles are the strongest single genetic factor related to genetic susceptibility to many immunological diseases.
We have multiple closely-related HLA genes that additionally are extremely variable making detailed mapping analyses difficult.
In our recent fine mapping study on HLA and lichen planus we demonstrated that the standard conditional approach does not reveal everything.
The high risk HLA DQ molecules formed trans heterodimers that additionally adjusted the disease risk.
Large biobank cohorts, here FinnGen, greatly help these studies.”
