Maria Luszczyn: Does Blood Transfusion Really Worsen Long-Term Survival after CABG or is Preoperative Anemia the Main Driver?
Maria Luszczyn, Clinical Coordinator at Medinet – Lower Silesian Heart Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Does blood transfusion really worsen long-term survival after CABG or is preoperative anemia the main driver?
In our latest study from the Zbigniew Religa Heart Center in Nowa Sól we evaluated 1,458 consecutive patients undergoing isolated CABG with a median follow-up of 5.4 years.
Using propensity score matching, we analyzed the two factors separately:
- Preoperative anemia (mostly mild) was significantly associated with decreased long-term survival (HR: 1.56, p=0.029).
- Perioperative PRBC transfusion, after balancing baseline and operative risks, did not adversely affect late survival (HR: 0.92, p=0.70).
These findings align with the principles of Patient Blood Management (PBM), supporting that proactive, early correction of anemia before surgery should remain a key clinical priority rather than relying on blood products later on.
Grateful to the entire team and my co-authors for collaborating on this project!”
