Perrine Henry: Iliac Venous Thrombus Identified as Rare Cause of Hindlimb Lameness in Dog with Primary Erythrocytosis

Perrine Henry, Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist at Alvetia Veterinary Clinic, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“You are presented with a 2-year-old cocker spaniel with right hindlimb lameness.

Immediately you jump to your differential to include a soft tissue/muscular injury, joint or bone problems.

Well not so fast, you forgot the V from your VITAMIN-D!

In this report, we describe a dog presenting with right hindlimb lameness due to an iliac venous thrombus secondary to primary erythrocytosis.

Thrombosis is a well known complication of erythrocytosis in humans but remains underdescribed in veterinary medicine.

This report interrogates whether anti thrombotic prophylaxis should be considered in dogs with primary erythrocytosis.

Massive congratulations to Robyn Belch (former HFSA intern, now internal medicine resident at UCD) for this publication, and thank you to all co-authors for their support!”
