Markus Abeln: How Platelets, Coagulation, Glycosylation, and Complement Regulate Placental Blood Flow

Markus Abeln, Research Group Leader at Hannover Medical School, shared The Journal of Clinical Investigation family of journals‘ post on LinkedIn:

“Our study by Smid et al. has been published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI)!

Using mouse models, we show how platelets, coagulation, glycosylation and the complement system work together to establish placental blood flow—and why their careful balance is essential for a successful pregnancy.

Special recognition goes to our first author, Arno Smid, whose work during his doctoral research was instrumental in bringing this study to publication.

Congratulations, Arno, and thank you for your dedication and perseverance!

Many thanks to all our co-authors for the wonderful collaboration!”

The Journal of Clinical Investigation family of journals shared post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Arno Smid et al, adding:

“Could excess complement activation lead to more thrombosis and miscarriages?

Arno Smid, Markus Abeln et al. examined mouse models with blood-clotting and immune defects, revealing cooperation between platelets, coagulation, and complement in establishing maternal blood flow to the placenta.

The data suggest that pathological thrombosis in the placenta can be mitigated by C3 deficiency or platelet depletion.”
