Michael Cahillane: Three-Buffy-Coat Platelets – Strengthening Blood Supply Resilience
Michael Cahillane, Senior Research Scientist at Welsh Blood Service, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Vox Sanguinis, adding:
“Three-buffy-coat platelet concentrates: Evaluation of a Welsh blood supply chain contingency strategy with wider opportunities for European practice․
Pleased to see this work from Welsh Blood Service published in Vox Sanguinis.
This study builds on our earlier modelling work by moving from theoretical feasibility to practical validation, demonstrating that three-buffy-coat platelet concentrates can be successfully manufactured while meeting relevant quality specifications for contingency use.
Some notable findings included:
- Consistent achievement of UK contingency and European quality specifications throughout storage.
- Preservation of key functional and haemostatic characteristics during storage.
- Evidence supporting an additional option for blood service contingency planning and supply resilience.
For me, this is a good example of the value of component development research. Success isn’t always about creating something entirely new. Sometimes it’s about generating the evidence needed to give services more options, greater resilience, and increased confidence when facing future challenges.
My thanks to everyone involved in the project, including funding received from European Blood Alliance.”
