Nawsherwan Mohammad: Hypercoagulability and Pulmonary Hypertension in Beta Thalassemia

Nawsherwan (Nawsherwan Sadiq Al Jabari) Mohammad, Consultant Hematopathologist at Nanakaly Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Eman M. Mansory et al, published in Iraqi Journal of Hematology, adding:

“Excited to share our latest published research in the Iraqi Journal of Hematology!

In our new study, ‘Study of platelet activation, hypercoagulable state, and pulmonary hypertension in patients with transfusion dependent beta thalassemia, we investigated the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms connecting iron overload, chronic anemia, and prothrombotic risk in transfusion dependent beta thalassemia (TDT).

Comparing 50 TDT patients with 50 healthy controls, our findings highlight significant platelet hyperreactivity (marked by elevated P selectin) and a pronounced depletion of natural anticoagulants like Protein C and Antithrombin III, strongly driven by hepatic iron toxicity and severe hemolysis.

These chronic hemostatic and endothelial alterations directly contribute to pulmonary microvascular thrombosis, paving the way for pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Our work underscores the clinical necessity of comprehensive patient management combining optimal iron chelation, routine coagulation monitoring, and timely vascular risk assessment to prevent life threatening cardiopulmonary complications.”
