Nisha Zahid: Study Links Preeclampsia to Impaired Mesenchymal Stem Cell Function

Nisha Zahid, Assistant Professor at Sir Syed College Of Medical Sciences For Girls (SSCMS), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Cureus Journal of Medical Science, adding:

“New Research Spotlight: Preeclampsia and Stem Cell Function.

I’m pleased to share our research exploring how preeclampsia may affect the functional properties of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs).

Our findings indicate that hUC-MSCs from preeclamptic pregnancies exhibit reduced cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and colony-forming capacity, alongside altered expression of key cell cycle-related genes.

These findings highlight how pregnancy-related complications may influence the biological characteristics of perinatal stem cells, with potential implications for their use in regenerative medicine.

Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and explore strategies to improve stem cell functionality.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to research that advances our understanding of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine.

I welcome your thoughts and discussions on the impact of the prenatal environment on stem cell function.”
