Oliver Weingärtner: How Do General Practitioners Use Cardiovascular Guidelines?
Oliver Weingärtner, Associate Professor of Medicine at Friedrich-Schiller University Jena, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Frontiers in Medicine adding:
”Just published Open Access in ‘Frontiers in Medicine’
How are guideline recommendations for cardiovascular patients adopted and implemented by general practitioners in Germany?
We surveyed 437 general practitioners—here are the results:
Recommendations from clinical guidelines—particularly those from the German National Disease Management Guidelines (NVL)—enjoy the highest level of acceptance in daily practice
However, frequent criticisms include the often very extensive presentation, alleged ‘lack of practical relevance,’ significant time requirements, ‘contradictory recommendations’ across different guidelines, and variations in validity.
Summaries of key recommendations—especially ‘pocket guidelines’ and regular publications in medical journals—could help support the application of clinical guidelines in practice.”
