Renzo Mancuso: Human Stem Cell Model Reveals Progenitor Fate in Tissue Macrophages
Renzo Mancuso, Group leader at VIB Center for Molecular Neurology, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Anna Martinez-Muriana et al, published in Developmental Cell, adding:
“Very happy to see this work now online in Developmental Cell!
In this study, we developed a human stem-cell-based system to recreate an early stage of myeloid development and test how these cells behave after transplantation.
We found that a yolk sac-like progenitor population can give rise to different tissue-resident macrophages depending on the organ they enter, including microglia and border-associated macrophages in the brain, as well as macrophages in the liver, heart, and kidney.
One of the most exciting aspects is what this could mean for cell replacement. If developmental origin helps determine how a macrophage behaves, then generating the right progenitor may be essential if we eventually want to replace dysfunctional macrophage populations in disease.
This opens up a lot of questions we are very keen to pursue, including in neurodegenerative disorders where microglia play an important role.
