Samer Alsaid: Warfarin Outcomes Reassessed Through COMBINE AF
Samer Alsaid, Cardiologist and Vascular Medicine Specialist, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in JACC: Advances, adding:
“Some projects become more than just papers.
Three years ago, my first project at the TIMI Study Group began with a long-standing idea of Dr. Eugene Braunwald.
He had long recognized that we had one of the world’s largest collections of patients treated with warfarin from the pivotal atrial fibrillation trials—and a unique opportunity to answer questions that remain clinically relevant today, including whether there are patients for whom warfarin may still be a reasonable option, particularly where access to DOACs is limited.
Three years later, that work has culminated in two companion papers from the COMBINE AF collaboration, now published in JACC: Advances.
Dr. Braunwald mentored this work every step of the way—with calls, ideas, and thoughtful edits—until the very end.
Sadly, he did not live to see these papers published.
His mentorship, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering commitment to improving patient care will stay with me for the rest of my career.”
