Shadi Tabibian: Understanding Thrombotic Risk in Rare Bleeding Disorders

Shadi Tabibian, Deputy of Research at Blood Diseases Research Centers in Iran University of Medical Sciences, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Thrombosis Journal, adding:

“I am pleased to share our newly published article in Thrombosis Journal:

‘Thrombosis in rare bleeding disorders: a bleeding phenotype does not fully preclude thrombotic risk.’

Thrombosis in patients with rare bleeding disorders is uncommon, but clinically important and potentially life-threatening.

In our cohort of 1,251 patients, 12 individuals (0.96 percent) experienced imaging-confirmed thrombosis.

All events were venous and occurred mainly in high-risk clinical settings, including pregnancy, surgery, infection, and exposure to replacement therapy.

The key message is clear: having a bleeding disorder does not eliminate thrombotic risk.

Recognizing prothrombotic triggers and carefully individualizing anticoagulation and replacement therapy are essential for safe patient management.
