Sheharyar Raza et al on Factor XIII Supplementation in Postpartum Hemorrhage
Sheharyar Raza, Transfusion Medicine Specialist and Data Scientist at University Health Network, shared on LinkedIn:
“Clots are bricks (platelets) and cement (fibrin). When we can’t maintain fibrin, severe bleeding can ensue. This is a major driver of postpartum hemorrhage, the leading cause of maternal death during childbirth globally.
In a new article, co-authors Jeremy Jacobs et al critically review the pathophysiology of postpartum hemorrhage, emphasizing fibrin breakdown and the potential role of clotting Factor XIII therapy in cases of severe, refractory bleeding.
