Sophia Delicou: Importance of Assessing Hemoglobin Functional Capacity Rather Than Total Levels

Sophia Delicou, Clinical Hematologist and Head of the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Unit at Hippocration General Hospital, Athens, posted on LinkedIn:

”I am pleased to share our recent publication ‘Functional Anaemia in Homozygous δβ-Thalassaemia Lepore Identified via HPLC’, published in the International Internal Medicine Journal.

This work presents a clinical case of homozygous δβ-thalassaemia Lepore, highlighting the importance of assessing the functional capacity of hemoglobin rather than relying solely on total hemoglobin levels.

Despite elevated HbF levels, its increased oxygen affinity may compromise effective tissue oxygen delivery, resulting in a state of functional anemia with relevant clinical implications.

These findings are particularly meaningful in the context of contemporary therapeutic strategies that aim to increase HbF levels.

I would like to thank my co-authors and collaborators for their valuable contributions and collaboration throughout this work.”
