Thierry Burnouf: Platelet-Derived Therapies Show Promise for Restoring Neuronal Mitochondrial Function
Thierry Burnouf, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Taipei Medical University, has shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Our new preprint is now available on bioRxiv: ‘Human Platelet-Derived Lysates and Extracellular Vesicles Restore Mitochondrial Function and Redox Balance in Neuronal Models’
This work, led by KIRTI GUPTA with contributions from Liling Delila, David Blum, Anup Pandith, and Thierry Burnouf, shows how platelet-derived formulations can restore mitochondrial activity and rebalance redox stress in models of neurodegeneration.
Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are common hallmarks of neurodegenerative diseases. We show that two clinically compliant platelet-derived products, a purified platelet lysate (HPPL), and a population of platelet extracellular vesicles (PEVs) rescue mitochondrial activity, reduce oxidative stress, and improve neuronal survival in both cell models and zebrafish embryos.
Data confirm that outdated clinical-grade platelet concentrates can provide a safe, scalable, and locally accessible resource for developing biotherapies, even in countries with limited infrastructure for advanced biologics manufacturing.”
