Tsubasa Tsutsumi: Hepatology x Cardiology – A Dialogue on Aspirin and Diet in MASLD

Tsubasa Tsutsumi, Staff Scientist at University of Chicago, shared on LinkedIn:

“Hepatology x Cardiology: A Dialogue on Aspirin and Diet in MASLD

I am pleased to share that our recent paper in Hepatology Research regarding aspirin use and the Mediterranean diet in MASLD sparked an important cross-disciplinary discussion.

We received a thoughtful Letter to the Editor from a cardiology team in Turkey, led by Dr. Oguzhan Celik. They strongly supported our findings, urging caution regarding aspirin use for primary prevention in older adults, citing the Primum non nocere (first, do no harm) principle and real-world data on inappropriate usage.

In our response published today, we thanked them for their insights and reiterated a key nuance: while aspirin carries risks in this population, diet quality (Mediterranean Diet Score) appears to modify the risk-benefit profile fundamentally.

It is encouraging to see these findings resonate across specialties.

Our Response.
