Vaidehi Prasanth: The Role of Viscoelastic Testing in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Vaidehi Prasanth, Senior Resident at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by her published in Tranfusion Medicine, adding;
”Trauma-induced coagulopathy remains a major challenge in the management of severe bleeding.
While viscoelastic testing (TEG/ROTEM) has demonstrated significant potential for guiding targeted haemostatic resuscitation, its implementation in low- and middle-income countries is often limited by financial, infrastructural, logistical, and training-related barriers.
In this article, the main focus is about:
- Current evidence comparing viscoelastic testing with conventional coagulation tests in trauma care.
- Challenges affecting adoption of VET-guided algorithms in resource limited settings.
- Practical and evidence based strategies to strengthen trauma haemorrhage management.
- The importance of patient blood management and system-level improvements in LMICs.
I am grateful to my mentors, faculty, and colleagues whose discussions and insights contributed to this work.”
