Storage Pool Deficiency An Overview of a Rare Platelet Disorder – EHC

European Haemophilia Consortium shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Extremely Rare Bleeding Disorder of the Month: Storage Pool Deficiency (SPD)

Platelets are the body’s first responders to bleeding, but in storage pool deficiency, they arrive with their toolkit half-empty. SPD is a rare platelet disorder caused by a deficiency or dysfunction of the granules inside platelets.

Without these granules, platelets struggle to activate and clump together, so bleeding can be prolonged or excessive.

What this can look like:

  • Easy bruising and frequent nosebleeds
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Prolonged bleeding after surgery, dental procedures, or injuries
  • Excessive bleeding after childbirth

SPD can be inherited or acquired, and some inherited forms occur as part of broader genetic syndromes.

Symptoms and severity vary widely from person to person.

Because SPD is rare and so variable, diagnosis is often delayed or overlooked.

It typically involves a detailed personal and family bleeding history, platelet function testing, and specialised laboratory investigations.

Care is personalised, based on the individual and the severity of their bleeding.

Options may include antifibrinolytic medicines, desmopressin, or platelet transfusions when appropriate, and careful planning before surgery or other invasive procedures can help prevent complications.
