At first glance, an empty blood bag might look likeโฆ just an ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฝ๐๐ ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ด.

When we talk about transfusion, we usually think about ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป๐ผ๐ฟ๐, ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐น๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ. But behind every unit of blood, a discreet actor plays a crucial role: CPD.

To prevent whole blood from clotting. Without it, the ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฎ๐ด๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฒย would start immediately, making it impossible to preserve blood components (red cells, plasma, platelets).

CPD is carefully formulated:
- ๐๐ถ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ binds calcium, essential for coagulation โ blocking the process.
- ๐ฃ๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฎ๐๐ฒ acts as a buffer โ keeping the pH stable, crucial for cell viability.
- ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ฒ feeds red blood cells โ providing the energy they need during storage.
And it all depends on one strict ratio:
