“Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis – a rare, life-threatening clot in the venous sinus at the skull base, often from facial/sinus infections.
Red flags: severe headache, fever, periorbital swelling/pain, ophthalmoplegia, vision changes, cranial nerve palsies.
Nursing Focus:
- Rapid escalation; anticipate IV broad-spectrum antibiotics
- Monitor neuro/ocular status, vitals, and sepsis markers
- Manage pain, protect airway if deteriorating, strict infection control
- Educate on early care-seeking for worsening sinus/eye symptoms
