Dr Zahoor: DVT Can Lead to PE if The Clot Dislodges

Dr Zahoor, Senior Medical epidemiologist at National institute of health Islamabad, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Cellulitis, including causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and management:

1. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Definition:

DVT is the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) in a deep vein, usually in the legs. It can lead to pulmonary embolism (PE) if the clot dislodges.

Causes / Risk Factors (Virchow’s Triad)

1. Venous stasis: Immobility, long flights, bed rest, surgery

2. Endothelial injury: Trauma, surgery, intravenous catheters

3. Hypercoagulability: Cancer, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, genetic clotting disorders

Symptoms

Swelling in one leg

Pain or tenderness (usually in calf)

Warmth and redness over affected area

Sometimes asymptomatic

Diagnosis

Clinical assessment: Wells score

D-dimer: Elevated in clot formation

Doppler ultrasound: Confirms presence of clot

Venography: Rarely used

Treatment

Anticoagulation: Heparin (UFH or LMWH), then warfarin or DOACS

Compression stockings: Reduce swelling and prevent post-thrombotic syndrome

Thrombolysis / thrombectomy: In severe or extensive.”
