Placental Angiogenic Imbalance in Congenital Heart Disease Pregnancies

”I’m pleased to share that our latest article, “Placental Angiogenic Imbalance and Its Association With Adverse Outcomes in Congenital Heart Disease Pregnancies,” has just been published in JACC: Advances.
In this prospective study, we investigated biomarkers of placental angiogenesis – sFlt-1 and PlGF – in pregnant women with congenital heart disease (CHD).
Our findings show that women with CHD exhibit higher sFlt-1, lower PlGF, and an elevated sFlt-1/PlGF ratio compared with healthy controls. This angiogenic imbalance was strongly associated with a higher risk of adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes.
These results reinforce the hypothesis of placental dysfunction in CHD pregnancies, and may open new perspectives for risk stratification and monitoring.
