VBRI Hosts Sickle Cell Transfusion Pioneer Stella Chou for Aster Lecture
Versiti Blood Research Institute posted on LinkedIn:
”Last month, VBRI had the honor of hosting Stella T. Chou for the 20th annual Aster Lecture on Transfusion Medicine.
Dr. Chou is an associate professor of pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Chief of the Division of Transfusion Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She practices both pediatric hematology and transfusion medicine with a particular focus on patients with sickle cell disease. As part of that dedication, she chaired the American Society of Hematology clinical guideline panel for transfusion management and advocates for improved transfusion care.
She’s advancing the field of sickle cell research through her work in RH genetic matching of red blood cells, integrating molecular technologies into medical practice, and developing new tools for blood banks.
In her presentation “Redefining Transfusion Medicine: Stem Cell-Derived RBCs and Precision RH Matching,” Dr. Chou shared her expertise and insights on:
• Red cell transfusion therapy and alloimmunization risks in sickle cell disease
• The role of RH genetic variation in alloimmunization
• Transfusion support advancements for patients
Events like this show how collaboration drives discovery. We’re grateful to Dr. Chou for visiting VBRI and sharing her expertise. Thank you to everyone who joined for this fascinating lecture.”
