Tagreed Alkaltham: When Blood Banks Say NO and Save a Life
Tagreed Alkaltham, Transfusion Medicine Lab Supervisor at KSMC, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“When Blood Banks Say NO and Save a Life
In blood banks, the most dangerous word is not NO
It’s an unexamined ‘yes’
In healthcare, speed is often praised.
Availability is expected.
And saying yes is often mistaken for cooperation.
But in blood bank leadership, some of the most life saving decisions begin with a different word:
NO
- NO to blood requests driven by self protection rather than true clinical need.
- No to urgency that compromises accuracy or the principle of the right blood for the right patient.
- No to emotional pressure, raised voices, or stress displaced onto frontline staff who are safeguarding care.
- No to manipulating systems, including unjustified MTP activations that favor one patient at the expense of another.
- No to shortcuts.
- No to interference.
- No to undermining the integrity, professionalism, or role of blood bankers.
Saying NO is not resistance.
It is responsibility
It requires clinical judgment under pressure, ethical clarity without hesitation, and governance systems that protect those who choose safety over convenience.
True leadership is tested not when processes flow smoothly,
but when someone must pause the system
and stand firm.
Not every ‘yes’ saves a life.
Some lives are saved by a quiet, principled ‘NO’
Because behind every decision, there is a life that trusts the system.”
