Matías J Alet: An Age-Related Etiologic Shift for Young Stroke In Uruguay
Matías J Alet, Member of Education Committee of World Stroke Organization, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
”I’m pleased to share our new publication in Neurology Argentina: ‘Young Stroke in Uruguay: Analysis of 355 Patients from the Stroke Unit at Clinicas Hospital.’
We analyzed 355 patients aged 16–55 years treated between 2007 and 2024.
In this cohort, 83.7% had ischemic stroke and 16.3% had hemorrhagic stroke.
A key finding is the age-related etiologic shift: in patients <40 years, ‘other causes’ predominate, with cervical artery dissection playing a major role; as age increases, traditional vascular risk factors become more prominent.
Based on these patterns, we propose 45 years as a meaningful cutoff to define ‘young stroke’ in Uruguay, to better align etiologic workup and improve comparability across cohorts.”
