Akshay Sharma: HSCT Leads to Sustained Improvements in Sickle Cell Cardiomyopathy for Up to 3 Years

Akshay Sharma, Associate Member at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, shared post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in British Journal of Haematology, adding:

“Excited to share our latest study published in the British Journal of Haematology!

We found that hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) leads to sustained improvements in sickle cell cardiomyopathy, extending up to 3 years after HSCT.

Key findings:

  • Significant improvements in cardiac remodeling, with reduced ventricular volumes and myocardial extracellular volume (a marker of fibrosis).
  • Elevated myocardial extracellular volume decreased in all individuals before HSCT to none at 3 years.
  • Compared with hydroxyurea and chronic transfusions, HSCT was associated with better diastolic parameters and lower tricuspid regurgitant velocity.

These findings suggest that curative therapies may fundamentally alter the trajectory of sickle cell–associated heart disease.

Grateful to our outstanding multidisciplinary team and collaborators at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.”
