Michael Baria: Is PRP Disease Modifying in Osteoarthritis?
Michael Baria, Lead for The Early Osteoarthritis and Joint Health Program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Head Team Physician for Ohio State Wrestling at The Ohio State University Department of Athletics, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Jiabao Chu et al. published in KSSTA:
“Here is a study I don’t think has gotten nearly enough attention.
Chu et al randomized over 600 knee OA patients (that alone is a feat) to receive either 3, weekly LP-PRP (4 fold platelets) or saline placebo.
Beyond the usual symptom improvement, the imaging results are impressive.
At 5 years, the PRP group lost cartilage volume at half the rate compared to saline.
A single round of PRP reduced cartilage loss for 5 years.
Amazing.
Whereas 10 years ago, the party line was that PRP is still only modifying symptoms, we can put to bed the question ‘is PRP disease modifying?‘.
We have clear evidence it is.
More encouraging; this was disease modifying with only 1 round of treatment.
Most of our patients routinely seek care every 6-12 months so we have every expectation their outcomes are even better.”
