Hannah Cohen: A Novel Approach to Post-Stroke Gait Rehabilitation
Hannah Cohen, PhD Student at University of Delaware Studying Biomechanics, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:
”I’m thrilled to share my recent work investigating a novel gait rehabilitation paradigm in individuals post-stroke!
After experiencing a stroke, many individuals experience difficulty walking.
Current rehabilitation methods focus on helping these individuals regain walking independence as quickly as possible, often encouraging compensation that is less metabolically and biomechanically efficient.
My lab previously developed a novel training paradigm, AccelBelt, which challenges propulsive force generation by accelerating the belt supporting the trailing limb during push off.
In this current study, we were able to test the effects of AccelBelt in individuals post-stroke.
We found that:
- Belt accelerations induced measurable effects in paretic propulsion mechanics during exposure (some of which persisted 1-3 minutes post-exposure).
- A responder analysis indicated that individuals with greater impairment exhibited larger relative changes in plantarflexor muscle activation after exposure.
This work contributes to our understanding of propulsion mechanics in individuals post-stroke, and also provides useful insights regarding post-stroke gait rehabilitation strategies.”
