Mascha Kern: Measuring Gender’s Role in Stroke and Migraine
Mascha Kern, Research Associate at Charité – University Medicine Berlin, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:
”The role of gender in health differences is gaining more attention – but measuring it remains a major challenge.
In our recently published article (my PhD paper), we addressed this by modeling gender as a latent construct using longitudinal data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP).
Combining causal diagrams and advanced statistical modeling, we explored hypothesized effects of sex and gender on migraine and stroke outcomes.
Our findings suggest that sex and gender show distinct patterns in stroke, while the gender effects vary across migraine subgroups.
This highlights the importance of social influences in health differences often attributed to biological sex alone.
How can we better integrate gender into large-scale health datasets?
Feeling very grateful for the dedication of my co-author Hans-Aloys Wischmann and the support of my supervisors Stefanie Theuring, Tobias Kurth, and Alex Müller.”
