Manali Kakadia: Evaluation and Management of Recurrent Epistaxis
Manali Kakadia, Rhinoplasty Specialist and ENT Surgeon in Rajkot, shared on LinkedIn:
”Nosebleed treatment is used to manage recurrent or persistent bleeding from the nose, medically known as epistaxis.
Nosebleeds are common and are often minor, but frequent episodes, heavy bleeding or bleeding that is difficult to stop may require evaluation by an ENT specialist.
Common causes and contributing factors can include:
- Dryness inside the nose
- Nose picking or minor nasal injury
- Allergies and repeated sneezing
- Nasal infections
- Irritation from sprays or environmental factors
- Deviated nasal septum
- High blood pressure
- Blood-thinning medicines
- Nasal polyps or other structural problems
Less commonly, underlying nasal growths or bleeding disorders Dr. Manali Kakadia evaluates patients with repeated nosebleeds to identify where the bleeding is coming from and whether an underlying nasal or medical condition may be contributing to the problem.
Initial treatment may involve controlling active bleeding and reducing irritation inside the nose. Depending on the cause and severity, management may include moisturising measures, medicines, nasal packing or cauterisation of the bleeding point when clinically appropriate.
Patients with recurrent nosebleeds may require a more detailed nasal examination. In some cases, nasal endoscopy can help assess deeper areas of the nasal cavity and identify structural abnormalities or other causes that may not be visible during a basic examination.
Seek medical attention promptly if a nosebleed is very heavy, follows significant facial injury, causes breathing difficulty, continues despite appropriate pressure, or is associated with dizziness, weakness or repeated unexplained episodes.
For patients experiencing frequent nosebleeds or recurrent epistaxis, an ENT evaluation can help determine the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment rather than repeatedly managing each episode without addressing the source.
