Heroine Helen Saves Stroke Victim’s Life – Eastlight Community Homes

”Heroine Helen saves stroke victim’s life!

We’re so proud of how our Facilities Manager’s fast-acting first aid skills saved the life of Dennis, 81, who was making a delivery in Colchester when he began having symptoms of a severe stroke.

Unsure where to turn, he went to our building asking for help.

First Aider, Helen, recognised his symptoms, including slurred speech, a drooping face and an inability to raise his arms.

Calling 999, Helen guided Dennis to a safe spot and calmly made sure he remained responsive while they waited for an ambulance.

Doctors then discovered Dennis had a 60% blockage in one of his arteries. A major 10-hour operation followed, which was thankfully successful.

Doctors remarked that Dennis was lucky to survive, as most stroke victims with a blockage of over 50% sadly don’t make it through.

Amazing work, Helen (who is now in regular contact with Dennis!) and thank you to our wonderful staff who volunteer as first aiders in our offices and help to keep colleagues and visitors safe.”
