Ayesha Saleem: Bridging the Gap Between Awareness and Diagnosis of vWD in Pakistan

Ayesha Saleem, Resident Hematologist at Shifa International Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:

”Making coagulation easy!

Despite being the most common inherited bleeding disorder globally, von Willebrand Disease (VWD) remains significantly underdiagnosed in Pakistan.

From ‘normalizing’ heavy menstrual bleeding to a lack of specialized testing centers outside major cities, many patients suffer in silence with chronic anemia or surgical risks.

In a country where consanguineous marriages increase the prevalence of severe Type 3 VWD, awareness is our first line of defense.

We need to move beyond basic screening and ensure that specialized VWF assays and genetic counseling are accessible to all.

Let’s bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and patient care.

Awareness saves lives.”
