Salih Ehsan: Key Diagnostic Clues in Thalassemia Minor

Salih Ehsan, Chief Executive Officer at Kulsoom Society of hematology, shared Fadwa Said Abdelazim’s post on LinkedIn:

“Remember the triad of thalassemia minor.

  1. Normal TRBCs in females versus high TRBCs in males.
  2. Microcytosis out of proportion to low hemoglobin.
  3. Normal RDW CV with low RDW SD (due to small uniform red cell population).

Fadwa Said Abdelazim, Professor in Heamatopathologyat Cairo University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

ITD 2026. Thalassemia Minor. Carrier Screening.

  •  Correction of Superimposed iron deficiency, B12 and folate deficiency, raise Hb to a better level.
  • Transferrin Saturation to Confirm iron overload/MRI T of liver in Carriers.
  • Ferritin may increase as acute phase reaction in Carriers.
  • Thalassemia Major/Intermedia: Ferritin and MRI T For iron overload.
  • Iron deficiency to a certain limit does not affect the Raised RBCs count or the level of Hb A2 in B-Thalassemia Carriers.
