Leonardo Roever: Can a Simple Cholesterol Ratio Predict Post-Stroke Depression?
Leonardo Roever, CEO of Brazilian Evidence-Based Health Network, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Xiangqi Kong et al, published in Lipids in Health and Disease, adding:
”The ratio between total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol predicts post-stroke depression: linear association and individualized risk nomogram.
Post-stroke depression (PCD) is a common and impactful complication of stroke; however, clinically applicable early prediction tools are still limited.
The ratio between total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol (TC/HDL) integrates atherogenic burden and neuroprotective reserve, making it a promising candidate for PCD risk stratification.
However, its association with PCD at 90 days and its usefulness in predictive models remain uncertain.
The TC/HDL ratio at admission is an independent prognostic marker of PCD at 90 days, with a linear dose-response relationship.
The internally validated nomogram can assist in risk estimation.
However, its clinical applicability still needs to be established and requires external validation.
Considering that the CT/HDL ratio is a simple, widely available, and low-cost biomarker, these findings may support early risk stratification and preventive psychological care in the routine management of stroke, particularly in clinical settings with limited resources.”
