Jorge Lima: Amniotic Fluid Embolism and Its Impact on Maternal and Perinatal Outcomes
Jorge Lima, Assistant Guest Professor at NOVA Medical School, Gynecologist and Obstetrician at Hospital da Luz Lisbon, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Obstetrical and Gynecological Survey, adding:
“I am pleased to share our latest article:
‘Amniotic Fluid Embolism: A Silent Threat to Maternal Life—An Up-to-Date Comprehensive Review of the Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Outcome.’
Published in Obstetrical and Gynecological Survey, one of the leading review journals in Obstetrics and Gynecology, this article provides an up-to-date overview of amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), one of the most devastating and unpredictable obstetric emergencies.
Together with Oluwateniayo O. Okpaise, João Feldman de Pinho, Edna Kathleen Porter, and Rodrigo Ruano, we review current evidence on:
- Epidemiology and risk factors;
- Pathophysiological and immunological mechanisms;
- Diagnostic challenges and emerging biomarkers;
- Contemporary management strategies;
- Maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Although rare, AFE remains associated with substantial maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality.
Improving awareness, facilitating early diagnosis, and optimizing multidisciplinary management are essential to improving outcomes.
I am grateful to my co-authors for this rewarding international collaboration (UK ,USA and Portugal) and for their commitment to advancing knowledge in maternal-fetal medicine.”
