Tarun Tyagi: Translational Insights into Severe Immune Thrombocytopenia
Tarun Tyagi, Associate Research Scientist at Yale University, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in RPTH, adding:
”There is no better satisfaction for a biomed researcher than when our translational science helps to solve a clinical puzzle!
Pleased to share our latest publication of real-world platelet investigation in RPTH Journal and grateful to the clinicians and laboratory team who made this translational effort possible.
I enjoyed driving this study with Natalia Neparidze , John Hwa, Stephanie Halene and Kanika Jain, at Yale Department of Internal Medicine.
We worked together to understand the cause of severe bleeding in a patient with profound thrombocytopenia and an unclear diagnosis.
The challenge was that conventional platelet function testing was not feasible or informative because of the extremely low platelet count.
This clinical question led us to take an unconventional translational approach, combining simple yet informative platelet assays to investigate platelet dysfunction and immune-mediated mechanisms.
The findings provided insights to help to characterize the pathology underlying a complex case of severe immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) with later diagnosed as linked to WM.
This work highlights an important lesson: when routine diagnostic tools reach their limits, carefully selected laboratory investigations can still provide meaningful insights.
Key takeaways:
- Severe ITP can be associated with life-threatening bleeding.
- Standard platelet function tests are not always useful in severe thrombocytopenia.
- Alternative platelet-focused investigations can uncover clinically relevant mechanisms.
- Simple, efficient assays can generate actionable data in challenging cases.
Big thanks to John Hwa, my mentor to motivate and support, and to study participants.
Also thanks to RPTH Journal editors for accepting this work.”
