Megan Adediran: Raising Awareness of Haemophilia Risks During Circumcision

Megan Adediran, Executive Director at Hemophilia Foundation of Nigeria, shared a post LinkedIn:

“Haemophilia and Circumcision: A Conversation We Need to Have.

In Nigeria, circumcision is a common practice and is often performed shortly after birth.

For most families, it is a routine procedure.

However, for a child with haemophilia or another bleeding disorder, circumcision can become the first sign that something is wrong.

Excessive or prolonged bleeding after circumcision is one of the ways haemophilia is sometimes discovered.

Unfortunately, when healthcare providers and families are unaware of bleeding disorders, delays in recognizing the warning signs can lead to serious complications.

This is why awareness matters.

Before circumcision, families with a known history of bleeding disorders should discuss it with their healthcare provider.

Proper assessment, planning, and access to appropriate care can help reduce risks and ensure safer outcomes.

Every child deserves a safe start to life.

Awareness, early diagnosis, and informed healthcare decisions can make all the difference.”
