Edward C.C. Wong: Anouncing 2026 Award for Scientific Research to Dr. William E. Winter
Edward C.C. Wong, Medical Director, Coagulation at Quest Diagnostics, shared onĀ LinkedIn:
“The Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine‘s Hematology/Coagulation Scientific Division would like to announce its 2026 Award for Scientific Research to Dr. William E. Winter!
During a career spanning almost four decades, Dr. Winter demonstrated superior dedication to ADLM and the general field of laboratory medicine by making enduring contributions to hemostasis and coagulation through his role as an educator and scientific leader and as a founding member of the hem-coag division.
Dr. Winter’s impact on the field of hemostasis is perhaps most visible through his extensive role as an educator and scientific leader. He has served as a cornerstone of hematology education, evidenced by his repeated recognition as the ‘Golden Apple’ award winner for the Hematology course at the University of Florida.
His ability to translate complex physiological concepts into clinical practice is further highlighted by his frequent invitations to speak at major international forums, including his recurring ‘What the PTT tells you… and when should you listen?’ sessions and his recent 2025 ADLM webinar on ‘Physiologic Hemostasis: An Overview’.
Dr. Winter has made significant scientific and clinical contributions in several key areas of hemostasis and coagulation:
- Coagulation Biology and Diagnostics: His lectures on “The Biology of Coagulation” and “Bleeding and Clotting: An Introduction to Coagulation” at the AACC Annual Scientific Meetings have provided critical foundational knowledge to thousands of clinical laboratory professionals.
- Thrombosis and Specialized Syndromes: Dr. Winter has provided expert insights into complex hematologic conditions, such as his work on “Systemic versus Intrarenal Thrombosis: TTP versus HUS” and “The Anti-Phospholipid Syndrome”.
- Platelet and Clotting Factor Research: His grand rounds presentations, such as “Platelets and Clotting Factors in Normal and Pathologic Coagulation,” demonstrate a career-long focus on the mechanics of hemostasis.
- Von Willebrand Disease: He has been at the forefront of addressing diagnostic challenges in hemostasis, specifically through sessions like “Von Willebrand Disease: Diagnostic Dilemmas and Proposed Solutions”.
- Hematology of Diabetes: Dr. Winter has uniquely bridged the gap between endocrinology and hematology, exploring the “Hematology of Hemoglobin A1c” and the impact of hemoglobin variants on clinical monitoring.
In addition to hemostasis and coagulation, Dr. Winter has made significant educational contributions concerning general hematology (including iron metabolism) in his publications and presentations.
Twenty three of his 44 hematology/coagulation presentations were for AACC/ADLM activities demonstrating his commitment to the organization.”
