Leonardo Roever: New Perspectives on Thromboinflammation in Acute Ischemic Stroke
Leonardo Roever, CEO of Brazilian Evidence-Based Health Network, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Umberto Pensato et al, published in Stroke, adding:
”Thromboinflammation in Acute Ischemic Stroke: From Pathophysiological Challenges to Emerging Therapeutic Opportunities
Despite major advances in intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy, nearly half of patients with acute ischemic stroke fail to achieve functional recovery, even after technically successful recanalization.
The gap between recanalization and reperfusion—the mismatch between angiographic vessel opening and the restoration of tissue-level perfusion—has brought thromboinflammation (the pathological interplay between coagulation and innate immunity) to the forefront of stroke biology.
This review outlines key thromboinflammatory challenges—such as recanalization resistance, the no-reflow phenomenon, and reperfusion injury—and discusses the therapeutic opportunities emerging from this context.”
