Gohar Tonakanyan: Presenting Armenian Factor VII Research at ISTH 2026
Gohar Tonakanyan, Medical Researcher at Clinical research projects shared a post on LinkedIn:
”I wanted to share with you a part of my unforgettable journey in Paris, where I had the privilege to present our research on Factor VII deficient patients in Armenia at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) 2026 Congress.
This was a unique milestone for me. It was the first time in my medical student years participating in a conference of this scale with my very first clinical work. Moreover, it took place in a city to which I have a deep personal connection, making it an incredibly special moment for me.
Our research presents a cohort of Armenian patients with consistently low (<50%) Factor VII coagulant activity who have the genetic R353Q polymorphism or no history of acquired deficiency.
We did not find a direct correlation between bleeding symptoms and the genetic variant, revealing a highly heterogeneous clinical presentation that wasn’t consistent with FVII levels alone.
This journey could not have taken place without an incredible support system. First of all, I want to express my deepest gratitude to my hematology professor, Dr. Nelly Sargsyan, who initiated this research and guided and supported me every single step of the way until my arrival in Paris. Thank you for your endless help, collaboration, trust, and gentle communication throughout this entire path.
I also want to thank Dr. Heghine Khachatryan, who is the most encouraging leader for young researchers and mentored us at the very start of our research jounrey.
Finally, all of the invaluable gains, global connections, and professional growth would not have been possible without the generous support of the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation Armenia.”
