Vonwicks Czelestakov Onyango: The Anticoagulation Dilemma in Ulcerative Colitis
Vonwicks Czelestakov Onyango, Internal Medicine Physician at St. Joseph Rift Valley Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in IJSRM, adding:
“Ulcerative colitis patients have a 2-3 fold increased risk of developing acute venous thromboembolic disease (DVT and PE).
This is especially true when they are in severe acute flare ups.
Which then brings in the conundrum: they need therapeutic anticoagulation (whose main risk is bleeding diatheses) yet they are presently bleeding from the acute flare up (in form of multiple episodes of bloody stools and hematochezia!).
The evidence supports offering them therapeutic anticoagulation anyway, as we discuss in this case write-up.”
