Victor Emmanuel: Preventing Severe Maternal Complications Associated With Anemia
Victor Emmanuel, Peer Reviewer at Springer Nature, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Anemia in pregnancy is often discussed as a common maternal health problem, but its consequences can be far from minor.
When severe or left unmanaged, anemia increases the risk of maternal complications and can contribute to maternal death, particularly during childbirth when blood loss occurs.
A woman who enters labor already weak from anemia is far more vulnerable if complications such as postpartum hemorrhage arise.
Think about it:
A pregnant woman may appear stable, but underlying anemia can reduce her ability to withstand blood loss, infection, or other obstetric emergencies.
Poor nutrition, malaria, parasitic infections, and limited antenatal care can all worsen the problem.
Preventing maternal deaths linked to anemia requires:
Early antenatal screening and diagnosis
Iron and folic acid supplementation
Malaria prevention and treatment where relevant
Nutrition support and health education
Timely management of severe anemia during pregnancy
Anemia may be common, but it should never be normalized when it can increase the risk of preventable maternal complications.
Maternal health is not only about managing emergencies.
It is also about addressing the conditions that make emergencies more deadly.”
