Toby Richards: Important Announcement about Testing for Iron Deficiency
Toby Richards, Director of The Iron Clinic, Professor of Surgery at University College London, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Important announcement about testing for Iron Deficiency.
NICE – the UK medical advisory council (similar to the FDA) has now recommended testing Ferritin in women with Heavy Periods.
This is a change 20 years in the making and a huge step forwards.
This comes from efforts by The Women’s Health Advisory Board that Prof Toby Richards participated in and his research on heavy periods and iron deficiency in women. over the last 10 years.
Heavy Periods: the need to double protect, get up at night, worried about going outdoors one or two days or the passage of clots. HMB affects 1 in 3 women of whom 2/3 will be iron deficient and 1/ 3 have iron deficiency anaemia.
Very important to raise awareness and testing.”
